Madison Fellowship

The awards fifty scholarships annually up to $24,000 for graduate studies that will lead to the recipient becoming a secondary teacher in American History, American Government, or Social Studies. The award is split over 2 years with a maximum amount of $12,000 in a given year. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition, fees, and books only, although room and board can be included if the student is required to live away from his/her primary residence. Recipients will also attend a 4 week summer institute in Washington D.C. with expenses being covered from the $24,000 scholarship amount. This award is open to graduating seniors and will fund a Master of Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, or a Master of Arts in American history or political science.

  • Applicants must be a US citizen or US national.
  • Applicants must be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level (grades 7-12).
  • Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree or plan to receive a bachelor's degree no later than August 31 of the year in which they are applying.

Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to a career teaching American History, American Government, or Social Studies at the secondary level with a particular emphasis on teaching that emphasizes the U.S. Constitution. Applicants should also have demonstrated devotion to civic responsibility along with a capacity for study and performance as classroom teachers with the proposed course of study.

Applicants compete only against other applicants from the states of their legal residence. Applicants are evaluated on their demonstrated commitment to a career teaching American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level; demonstrated intent to pursue and complete a program of graduate study that emphasizes the Constitution and offers instruction in that subject; demonstrated devotion to civic responsibility; demonstrated capacity for study and performance as classroom teachers, and their proposed courses of graduate study. Applicants will be evaluated without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, political affiliation, marital status, sexual orientation or other non-merit factors.
