Alumni-created nonprofit S H E empowers girls in Togo and students at the 果冻传媒麻豆社

Upon graduating in 2017, Payton McGriff founded , a non-profit that creates educational and employment opportunities for women and girls in Togo. But, it’s not just students in Togo that she is empowering.

McGriff has continued to involve students from the 果冻传媒麻豆社 in her work, including architecture students in the design for a new school and education students in development of learning materials.

Students in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences translated those educational materials into French, creating lesson plans and worksheets that students in Togo can more easily understand.

“My experience is a wonderful example of the collaborative potential available at the 果冻传媒麻豆社,” McGriff said. “The U of I community continues to support us along this journey, and we could not be more proud to be Vandals.”

Students in Sarah Nelson’s French Translation class were tasked with translating educational materials developed for the schools into French, the country’s primary language.
“Students in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences created these lessons in English last spring. We realized that it would work great for me to then have my translation class work on them this fall.”

Madison Meckel ’20 an international studies and French major interned in Togo in 2019 and met girls involved with S H E. “I know the people that these are going to. I know they are going to read them and do these activities, and they are going to have so much fun.”

The class will translate around 30 different pages of lesson plans and corresponding activity sheets to help educate girls in Togo in fun ways. Currently, most only average three years of schooling.
“Payton and S H E is empowering girls in Togo, and by involving the university, she is also empowering students here,” Meckel said.
