Family and Consumer Sciences

We offer workshops, classes and a variety of family and consumer sciences-related resources.

Consumers recognize and respect Extension educators as a reliable source of food safety and food preservation information. Annually, within the state, FCS Extension educators answer thousands of questions on how to safely handle, store and preserve food.

Preserve@Home

This web-based class teaches individuals how to safely preserve a variety of food products. Contact the UI Extension, Minidoka County office for details on the next Preserve@Home course.

Master Food Safety Advisor Program

UI Extension offers research-based education on how to safely preserve a variety of food products.

After completing the course, Master Food Safety Advisors volunteer their service to provide information to others in their community.

Classes are taught by Extension educators and Advanced Master Food Safety Advisors. Each session includes demonstrations, lectures and a hands-on lab where participants make a variety of preserved foods.

Topics include:

  • Food safety
  • Canning acid foods (fruits, tomatoes)
  • Canning low acid foods (meats, vegetables)
  • Making jams, jellies and preserves
  • Pickling
  • Dehydration and smoking
  • Food storage including emergency preparedness
  • Freezing
