Research Degrees

The Modelling & Simulation group welcomes PhD studies that contribute to the advancement of theory and practice of both discrete (discrete-event simulation, agent-based simulation), continuous (system dynamics, FEM, CFD) and distributed/hybrid simulation across many areas from healthcare, manufacturing and social issues.  The group also welcomes research topics with a simulation focus in data science, AI and high-performance computing.

Industry

Taking advantages of innovations in high performance computing, distributed systems, cloud computing and the Internet of Things, the Group works towards advancing the state of the art of M&S in industry. Highlights include:

  • Research towards auto-scaling of cloud computing for high performance simulation experimentation with Saker Solutions and Sellafield Ltd. (project led by the University of Westminster)
  • Development of the CraftBrew Whole Brewery Management System (with Saker Solutions and Hobsons Brewery)
  • Development of a Load Planning Service to support the efficient distribution of cargo for delivery services
  • Advised DSTL on cloud-based simulation development
  • Creation of 11 new cloud-based simulation products (CloudSME project)
  • Scientific board member of  (spinoff company from the CloudSME project that continues to develop cloud-based simulations in industry)
  • Design of high performance simulation systems currently in use in industry (Ford Motor Company, Saker Solutions, Sellafield PLC).

Africa

The Group has led and been involved in the promotion and development of e-Infrastructures in Africa for over a decade in conjunction with the AfricaConnect projects. Highlights include:

  • Co-development of the National Research and Education Network Service Roadmap for 11 countries in West and Central Africa in conjunction with the West and Central African Research and Education Network ()
  • Promotion of Open Science in Africa with the development of the Open Science Platform in the  project (see  for a great project video)
  • Development of the  training program that has trained 35 new Open Science Champions with the University of Catania

Healthcare

We also pursue healthcare research with a specialism in microsimulations of clinical pathways. The Group has developed:

  • Agent-based simulations of physical activity interventions (EMPHASIS)
  • Microsimulations of clinic pathways including prostate cancer and atrial fribulation (MAPGUIDE)
  • Microsimulations of clinical trial outcomes (adjuvant breast cancer)
