Changes in Course Enrollment

Exchanging a Course

  • One course exchange per registration is allowed.
  • The exchange must be made within 45 days of registration.
  • The course completion date will remain the same as the original registration.
  • A nonrefundable $30 fee must be paid when exchanging a course, plus $25 for any assignment/exam submitted for the original course.
  • If the new course carries more credit than the original course, and if the new course is graduate level, the student will be charged for any additional credits or differences in fees.
  • If the new course carries less credit than the original course, or if the student is transferring from the graduate to undergraduate level, the difference will be refunded according to the refund schedule (see Refund Schedule).
  • Submit Exchange Course requests online.

Course Extensions

Generally, one four-month extension from the original end date of a course can be purchased at a cost of $110 before the course expires.

Students with extenuating circumstances that make it impossible to complete an ISI course by the end of 16 months of enrollment may be eligible for an exception to the one extension policy. Extenuating circumstances include serious illness or injury or the death of a family member.

If a student would like to appeal for a second extension due to an extenuating circumstance, they should submit an appeal to the one-extension policy at least 14 days before their first extension is scheduled to expire.

The following information should be addressed in the appeal:

  • A summary of any conversations the student had with the instructor or the ISI office at the onset of the extenuating circumstance;
  • Evidence that the student has made consistent progress in the course throughout the period of enrollment;
  • Evidence that the student has completed 80 percent or more of the course work which includes all assignments and exams;
  • Evidence that the student maintained a passing grade as based on the requirements of the course sponsoring institution; and
  • Any supporting documentation the student is comfortable sharing.

If the appeal is granted, the ISI office will provide the student with a contract that stipulates the assignment(s) required to finish the course and the length of the second extension. The student must provide written acceptance of the contract. No student will be allowed more than three months to complete the required assignment(s).

Dropping Courses

  • You may drop ISI courses at any time; however, there is a time limit for refunds (see Refund Schedule).
  • Drop a course by submitting the Drop Course Form online or by mailing a letter to ISI. The letter must include the date, course subject and number, your name, and signature.
  • The course will not appear on your academic transcript, and there will be no permanent academic record at any of the cooperating institutions (see Time Considerations and Transcripts).

Hardship Withdrawal

Students may withdraw from an Independent Study in Idaho (ISI) course by completing a regular drop through the ISI website or requesting a hardship withdrawal from the ISI office. See the Hardship Withdrawal policy for more information.
