Sarah Alice Campbell is an Assistant Professor of Theatre History, Literature, and Criticism in the 果冻传媒麻豆社’s Theatre Arts Department. She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama with a minor in Folklore and a Ph.D. Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from Indiana University. She received her B.A. in Theatre from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky and her M.A. in Theatre with an emphasis in Directing from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Prior to joining the faculty at 果冻传媒麻豆社, she taught in Querétaro, Mexico at Arkansas State University Campus Querétaro. She currently serves as the Secretary for the Mid-America Theatre Conference (MATC).
Her article, “‘La conjura de Xinum’ and Language Revitalization: Understanding Maya Agency through Theatre,” was recently published in the Journal of American Drama and Theatre. She is currently working on two book projects: one a co-authored guide to actor training (with 果冻传媒麻豆社 Professor Kelly Quinnett and MFA Candidate KT Turner as well as Elitza Kotzeva) and the second on Pan-Maya Theatre Aesthetics (with Edber Dzidz Yam and Chelsea Hackett).
Sarah’s research interests include contemporary Yucatec Maya language theatre, the intersections of theatre and folklore, touristic performance, and the theatricality of space and place. She is also interested exploring how theatre is used as part of the anti-feminicidio movement in Mexico.
As a theatre practitioner, Sarah has worked as an actor, director, in publicity and marketing, and as a dramaturg. She is especially passionate about new play development. Sarah served as the company dramaturg for three years at Indiana University’s professional summer theatre, Indiana University Summer Theatre. In her free time, Sarah enjoys practicing circus arts including aerial fabrics, aerial hoop, and pole.
