Research Symposium

Idaho WWAMI Research Symposium

Welcome to the Idaho WWAMI Medical Education Program's annual Medical Student Research Poster Symposium at the 果冻传媒麻豆社!

Our research symposium provides a platform for medical students to showcase their research to a diverse audience, including fellow students, esteemed faculty and engaged community members. The event is an opportunity for students to present their research projects; however, it also creates a forum for the exchange of intellectual ideas in a professional setting. Attendees will have the chance to interact with medical students who are passionate about advancing scientific medicine and fostering connections that may shape the future of healthcare. Our mission is to cultivate the next generation of physician scientists who are committed to pushing the boundaries of medical knowledge, contributing to the ongoing progress of healthcare, and improving the healthcare provided to Idahoans. Your presence at this vital event will help champion the pursuit of better science and more effective medicine for years to come. Thank you for being a part of our commitment to excellence in medical education and research.

The 2024 research symposium will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2024

RUOP is an experience-driven investigation of an issue within a community. Students participating in RUOP will observe the health care in that community setting, then develop a project based on those observations. The project could be a community needs assessment, a community health intervention plan, or an evaluation of a service delivery project among other things.

GHIP is an option for students with an interest in global health and underserved communities and is particularly suited to students on the Global Health Pathway. Students spend a minimum of eight weeks in a developing country working to understand and help improve the local health communities. Similar to RUOP, students will perform a community health assessment and will develop and implement a community health project.

The Scholarship of Discovery is an empirical research opportunity in which new discoveries are made through original investigation. A hypothesis is made regarding the relationship between variables and a study attempts to validate the hypothesis through observation. The study may take the form of a basic laboratory study, a survey, a secondary analysis of an existing data set, a chart review, a qualitative study, or a prospective clinical trial. Research may be directed toward a question in any field related to medicine.

Scholarship of Integration is work that synthesizes and gives meaning and perspective to isolated facts. This often takes the form of a literature review. Literature reviews poses unresolved questions and attempts to answer that question by synthesizing evidence in published literature. Options for a literature review include:

  • Narrative Review - Summarizes literature based on a research question.
  • Scoping Review - Summarizes a broad scope of literature in order to describe what has been written about the chosen topic.
  • Systematic Review - Summarizes literature based on a focused, precise question while also highlighting the quality of the literature often a standardized scoring system (i.e. MERSQI score for medical education research). Requires multiple team members to analyze literature quality. The synthesis of the results is qualitative.
  • Meta-Analysis - Gives a quantitative answer to a focused, precise question by analyzing data from multiple studies deemed of sufficient quality (i.e. MERSQI score). Requires multiple team members to analyze literature quality.
