Service Payback
In the 2022 legislative session, the Idaho legislature passed a bill affecting new Idaho students in the WWAMI program. This new law affects WWAMI students starting the program in the Fall of 2023. Idaho resident students accepted into the WWAMI medical program or the University of Utah School of Medicine in a slot reserved for an Idaho student are now required to enter active full-time professional practice in Idaho for a period of four years. This four-year full time professional practice must start within one year of obtaining a license to practice medicine, finishing a residency or subspeciality residency, or finishing a medical education fellowship. The law requires students to contractually commit to this work-in-Idaho requirement. Failing to abide by that contract will require the student to reimburse the state of Idaho for the amount of money the state spent supporting the student’s medical education. This requirement may be waived in certain circumstances. You may read the legislation .
