Cord Safety

One of the most frequently noted building inspection discrepancies is the use of extension cords. Flexible electric extension cords are not allowed to be used as a substitute for fixed permanent electric wiring. Relocate equipment to eliminate need for extension cord, replace flexible extension cord with a UL-listed, circuit protected power strip that is plugged directly into outlet or have Facilities install additional outlets.

Do not replace extension cords with multi-plug adaptors as these are not allowed to be used in public buildings. Electric power taps shall not be "daisy chained," "piggy backed," or otherwise connected to one another. Relocate equipment to eliminate connected power strips or replace power strips with a UL-listed power strip with a long enough cord to plug directly into an outlet or have Facilities install additional outlets.
