About Fort Hall Reservation
The Fort Hall Reservation is home to the Shoshone-Bannock tribes. It is located within Bannock, Bingham, Caribou and Power counties, and is bordered by Pocatello and Blackfoot.
Founding
The reservation was established in 1868 with the signing of the Fort Bridger Treaty in the Wyoming Territory. The Shoshone-Bannock tribes negotiated their treaty with the federal government and were not “conquered” tribes.
Uses and Economics
The reservation occupies 545,662 acres. The Tribe owns 97.3% with the remaining land allotted to individual tribal members.
There are 344,942 acres of rangeland used mainly for cattle grazing and hunting. About 150,000 acres are farmed. The remaining acreage is used for tribal businesses, economic development and residential areas.
Tribal lands have proven to be a beneficial economic resource. The Tribe and Tribal members owning portions of these lands receive income from grazing permits and lease payments.
