Robert has been on the soil science faculty at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç for 40 years. He is a professor of soil, water and environmental sciences in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Department of Soil and Water Systems. He has held appointments in teaching, research and instruction. His specialty areas are soil fertility/plant nutrition, drinking water and human health, water quality and environmental science.
Mahler has bachelor’s and master’s from Washington State University and received his doctorate at North Carolina State University in soil science. He has published over 300 scientific papers in his career. He also has deep roots in western agriculture as his grandfather, Emilio Ortega, established the Ortega Chile Company in the 1930’s. This company’s brand is still widely sold (canned green chiles) in supermarkets across the U.S.
He has taught more than 14,000 students at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç over his career — both in the classroom and through distance education. He has taught more UI students than any current active faculty member at this institution.
Mahler has been major professor for 39 students that have completed advanced degrees at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç. This includes 33 master’s degrees and six doctorates. Students have completed advanced degrees in soil science, environmental science and plant science.
