Barcoding

Index Barcode Format for Mail

Campus Mail Services uses barcode scanning technology to input index numbers when recording postage costs. If using barcode labels they should be placed either above or below the return address and clear of the address line. If using a Red Budget Card just affix it firmly to the stack of outgoing mail. Please keep the postage area (upper right corner) clear.

Your barcode should look like this:

*ABC123*
*ABC123*

We can also create your barcodes in a PDF file and e-mail them to you in a ready to print format. E-mail the index number needed, your name, department name, phone number and campus zip to campusmail@uidaho.edu. We will create the index barcode to fit the Avery 5167 labels (or equivalent labels, 80 per page) and email the PDF back to you.

You may request the 3 of 9 barcode TrueType font by e-mailing campusmail@uidaho.edu. After receiving and downloading the file, any application you are running that uses TrueType Font (*.TTF) files under Windows should allow you to select 3 of 9 Barcode from its fonts menu.

Microsoft Word users

Disable the AutoFormat feature for *Bold* (under "AutoFormat" and "AutoFormat As You Type"), otherwise the "*" character will be interpreted as the Word command code for selecting the Bold font attribute, not as a "real" character.

After you have selected the 3 of 9 Barcode font you will need to set the font size. A setting of 12pt or larger font is best for laser printers.  Inkjet printers need a font size of 16pt or larger. Type the budget number with an asterisk before and after the number. Type the budget number in all upper case and no spaces. So a budget number of ABC123 would be *ABC123*.

Following the steps mentioned above should result in a printable barcode showing up on your screen as you type. If you produce your own barcodes, always have a sample verified with Campus Mail and Receiving before using. Send a sample by e-mail or Campus Mail and Receiving (2282) before printing your supply.

If you have any questions you may contact us at 208-885-5256/7011 or campusmail@uidaho.edu.
