Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar/Fellow Award

Description

The Outstanding post-doctoral scholar/fellow award is part of the continuing effort by the College of Graduate Studies and Office of Research and Economic Development to recognize and encourage excellence in research and other creative activities by post-doctoral fellows at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to nominate an outstanding post-doctoral scholar/fellow for this award.

Eligibility

Nominees must be post-docs who are currently employed at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç and have demonstrated extraordinary efforts in their research or creative work and have fully engaged with the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç community of faculty, staff and students.

Selection Criteria

  • Quality, significance and extent of research, teaching, or creative accomplishments. 
  • Efforts to engage with the entire campus community as a professional development opportunity.
  • Communication of scholarly works to appropriate audiences.
  • Engagement with students and faculty/staff in the classroom or laboratory.

The Award

The award recipient will receive a gift recognizing the award and $1000. The awards will be announced at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç Excellence Awards Ceremony in April.

Nomination Process

All nomination materials must be submitted via the Excellence Awards Nomination Form. This award is listed under the faculty tab. ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç the Excellence Awards website to view the nomination deadline and click the vandal gold nominate someone button on the top right. COGS will not accept incomplete nomination packets. It is the duty of the Nominator and Nominee to gather all necessary materials for a completed nomination application. Nominations must adhere to the length guidelines above.

The nomination packet must include:

  1. A letter, signed by the nominator, which includes the nominee’s name, unit, college and progress in professional development activities. The nomination letter should describe in detail the quality, significance and extent of the research or creative activity, the engagement of the nominee in the overall functioning of the research program and department activities and the efforts the nominee has engaged in to develop academic, research and professional skills. The letter should not exceed three pages. Nominators may make only one nomination; multiple letters from a single nominator will not be accepted. The nomination letter must be clearly identified as a nomination letter.
  2. A brief (2-3 page) personal statement from the nominee outlining their accomplishments, and alignment of their accomplishment to their professional goals, while a post-doc at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç.
  3. A curriculum vita that clearly lists the nominee’s publications, patents and professional development activities accomplished at U of I.
  4. Two additional letters of support which demonstrate how the nominees research or creative activity will impact their field. The support letters must be clearly marked "letter of support" rather than a nomination letter.

Selection Process/Deadline

An interdisciplinary committee selected by COGS and the U of I Office of Research and Economic Development and composed of faculty and post-doctoral scholars/fellows who are part of the U of I Post-doctoral Association will review and select the winner.
