U of I Black History Research Lab

The Black History Research Lab opened in the Fall of 2021 based on the gracious support of the UI Presidential Fund on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grant Program. The ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç has an untold history of Black academics, students, administrators, faculty, athletes and civic activism. The primary objective of this lab is to chronicle the contributions of Blacks at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½Â鶹Éç. And its secondary objective is to facilitate research that centers Black excellence, joy, and thriving in the academy. The lab utilizes the steps of the Black Transformation Model to guide its activities.

The work of the lab will lead to:

  1. Developing a virtual/digital exhibit in partnership with the U of I library
  2. Creating a physical traveling exhibit
  3. Publishing peer-reviewed articles
  4. Presenting academic presentations on the topic

The lab also receives additional financial and resource support from UI’s College of Education, Health, and Human Services, the Digital Initiatives department and History department.
